स्टीफन हॉकिंग को १९७८ में इस पुरस्कार से सम्मानित किया गया था।


अल्बर्ट आइंस्टीन पुरस्कार (जिसे कभी-कभी अल्बर्ट आइंस्टीन मेडल भी कहा जाता है, क्योंकि इसमें स्वर्ण पदक दिया जाता था) सैद्धांतिक भौतिकी में एक पुरस्कार था, जिसे प्राकृतिक विज्ञान में किसी की उच्च उपलब्धि के लिए प्रदान किया जाता था। अल्बर्ट आइंस्टीन के ७०वें जन्मदिन पर उनके सम्मान में लुईस और रोजा स्ट्रॉस मेमोरियल फंड द्वारा इस पुरस्कार का वितरण शुरू किया गया था। यह पुरस्कार पहली बार १९५१ में वितरित किया गया था, और इसमें पुरस्कार स्वरुप एक स्वर्ण पदक और मूर्तिकार गिलरॉय रॉबर्ट्स द्वारा रचित आइंस्टीन की प्रतिमा के अतिरिक्त,[1] १५,००० डॉलर की पुरस्कार राशि भी शामिल थी,[2][3] जिसे बाद में घटाकर ५००० डॉलर कर दिया गया था।[4][5]


पुरस्कार के विजेता का चयन प्रिंसटन, न्यू जर्सी के इंस्टिट्यूट एडवांस्ड स्टडीज द्वारा गठित एक समिति करती थी; जिसके पास इस पुरस्कार के प्रशासन की जिम्मेदारी थी;[3] और पहली समिति में रॉबर्ट ओपेनहाइमर, जॉन वॉन न्यूमैन और हरमैन वेल के अतिरिक्त स्वयं आइंस्टीन भी शामिल थे।[6] इस पुरस्कार को कुछ लोग "नोबेल पुरस्कार के सामान प्रतिष्ठित" मानते हैं।[7]द न्यू यॉर्क टाइम्स ने इसे "संयुक्त राज्य में अपने समतुल्य सभी पुरस्कारों में सर्वश्रेष्ठ" कहा गया है।[8]
